Odd that you would use the Ash here—since many think it to be the Tree of Life—and connect it with death. My only real gripe with this piece is: who are the ‘them’ that get hung on the tree? Again I get the feeling you’re referencing something outwith my ken as was the case with Electra. Oedipus Rex I know but I’ve never taken much of an interest in early Greek drama so much so that when you mentioned Greek chorus to me the first thing I thought about was Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite which employs one to good effect. I like the use of the word ‘popling’ though. Like all good words I suddenly have the urge to find an excuse to use it in something.

you're right I think I should reference this one. it's about the Campbells massacre of the Lamonts in 1646, as part of the massacre they hung 36 Lamonts from an ash-tree here in Dunoon. thanks jim!
